Yes, quite a few automakers do high altitude testing around the Colorado Mountains. Last I checked it gets as high as 12,000 feet above sea level!

I guess its to give people less things to complain about. If they see faded paint, unpainted bumpers, minor imperfections, etc. on a production looking car it can be taken the wrong way.

I never really considered that, but it make perfect sense.

Just my theory. I'm sure that when testing car the last thing they should be concerned about is how presentable is it to the general public.
