Electric Ford Mustang to Enter Production In December 2028

Well it looks like we have a date for when the Mustang will go fully electric. Ford is reportedly going to start production on the electric Mustang in December 2028 at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant.

The report from Autoline also suggests that the electric Mustang will pretty much be the next gen Mustang so how does that affect the 2023 Mustang? Does that mean it's only going to have minor design changes? It would be really weird if Ford have the 6th gen Mustang a 15 year life cycle until the electric one comes out.

I think this is a good move. Few automakers are rushing to launch an EV coupe.
But we are expected to get a hybridized Mustang coupe this generation:

"The British publication seems to be in the know that the next-generation Mustang could receive a hybridized version. The new Mustang is slated to arrive at some point in 2021 or 2022 and will once more be a global player for the company"

"Autocar’s report quotes a U.S. patent filing by Ford from 2017, where the manufacturer is referring to a “twin-motor drive system for hybrid vehicle.” The technical drawings of this filing reportedly show a V8 powering the rear wheels and two electric motors “mounted directly to opposing sides of the engine” taking care of the front wheels."
Glad to get some kind of confirmation that the rumor of it coming in 2028 is false.
Ford is expected to reveal a new EV platform in 2023 that will likely be the platform used in the Mustang coupe EV.

Ford earlier this year introduced the Mustang Mach-E, an electric crossover built on a new dedicated platform with the internal designation GE, the sources said.

A newer version of that platform, designated GE2, will debut in mid-2023, underpinning new Ford and Lincoln SUVs, according to Sam Fiorani, head of global forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions.

The same GE2 platform eventually will be used as the base for replacements for the Mustang coupe and Mach-E, the sources said.
